Last Friday Tyler had his first dentist appointment. Unsure about his reaction Jim and I talked up the visit for days in advance. When it came time for his actual appointment he was very excited to show off his teeth to the dentist. He was shy at first with the dental hygienist but quickly warmed up when she gave him a new toothbrush and sunglasses (to protect his eyes from the examination light). When the dentist came in he laid his head in her lap and let her brush and examine his teeth. He even got a fluoride treatment. As you can see from the pictures Pup also got his teeth checked out. She said Tyler's teeth look great, however the front teeth are starting to push out from his nap and nighttime nuk usage. Her recommendation was to wean him off the nuk soon.

We'd been pondering how and when to make this transition: before the baby comes, after moving to a big boy bed, never?? With this gentle prompting from the dentist we decided the time is now and Saturday night Tyler went to bed nuk free. During his bath we explained to him that since he was a big boy his nuks had to go to all the babies who needed them. He took the news in stride during the bath but in his bed it was another story. The next week nighttime and nap times were tough but he never cried for too long and once he was asleep he was fine. Before going to sleep he would look at us and say, "Nuks all gone to all the babies", just to make sure things hadn't changed. Each day got progressively better and the past few days he's gone down with no crying and hasn't mentioned his nuk at all. Yay! The transition actually went much smoother than we anticipated and was probably harder on me than it was on him. Either way, we're happy it's over!!
